Description
A Wait & Weight kill sheet on one page. Enter the well, the drill string and the slow circulating rate pressure ahead of time. Once the well is shut in and stable, add SIDPP, SICP and the pit gain. The sheet returns the kill mud weight, the initial and final circulating pressures, the strokes and time to the bit and for one full circulation, MAASP with the original and the kill mud, an estimate of the influx height and gradient, and the drill pipe pressure schedule as a table and a chart. Three checks flag a casing pressure at or above MAASP, a kill mud as heavy as the shoe's leak-off, and an influx tall enough to reach the casing.
Parameters:
- Well geometry: Bit MD and TVD, casing shoe MD and TVD, casing ID and bit size (ft, in)
- Drill string: OD, ID and length of the heavy-weight and the collars. Drill pipe makes up the rest of the depth (in, ft)
- MW: Original mud weight (ppg)
- LOT: Leak-off test at the shoe, as an equivalent mud weight (ppg)
- Pump output, kill rate, SCR pressure: Output per stroke at the running efficiency (bbl/stk), the kill rate (spm), and the slow circulating rate pressure recorded at that rate with the original mud (psi)
- Gel strength: 10-minute gel, for the pressure needed to break circulation after the shut-in (lb/100ft²)
- SIDPP, SICP, pit gain: Stabilised shut-in pressures (psi) and the volume gained (bbl)
Method: Formation pressure = 0.052 × MW × TVD + SIDPP. Kill mud weight = MW + SIDPP / (0.052 × TVD), rounded up to the next 0.1 ppg. ICP = SIDPP + SCR pressure. FCP = SCR pressure × KMW / MW. Pipe capacity is ID² / 1029.4 bbl/ft and annular capacity (Dh² − Dp²) / 1029.4. The annulus is split into six sections: each string component against open hole and against casing, with each section's length the overlap of the component with that interval. Strokes are volume divided by pump output. MAASP = (LOT EMW − MW) × 0.052 × shoe TVD. The influx is assumed to fill the open-hole annulus upward from the bit, so its height follows from the pit gain and the section capacities. Its gradient is 0.052 × MW − (SICP − SIDPP) / height, read as gas below 0.25 psi/ft and as water above 0.40. The schedule drops drill pipe pressure in ten equal steps from ICP to FCP while kill mud fills the string, then holds FCP until kill mud reaches surface. The formulas are the sheet's own _PO.DE.* LAMBDAs, so it calculates with no add-in installed.
Example: A 15 bbl kick taken at 12,500 ft MD / 11,800 ft TVD with 11.2 ppg mud, SIDPP 420 psi and SICP 610 psi. That needs 11.9 ppg kill mud, ICP 1,070 psi and FCP 691 psi, with about 2,070 strokes to the bit at 30 spm. The influx gradient of about 0.21 psi/ft reads as gas.
