Description

What the hole does to the mud, and what the mud says about the hole. For the planned ROP the sheet works out the cuttings volume per foot, the cuttings concentration in the returns, the annular velocities and the highest ROP that keeps the annulus mud weight under a limit, with that limit charted against flow rate. It gives the solids content from the mud weight and the dilution needed to bring a heavy system back to weight. Two marker calculations use the well's geometry. A drill pipe washout depth comes from the strokes until a marker is seen back at surface, and the average open-hole diameter and excess volume come from a carbide lag.

Parameters:

  • Well geometry and drill string: As on the kill sheet: bit and shoe depths, casing ID, bit size, and the OD, ID and length of each string component (ft, in)
  • Q, MW, MW limit: Flow rate (gpm), mud weight in, and the highest mud weight allowed in the annulus (ppg)
  • ROP, porosity: Planned rate of penetration (ft/hr) and formation porosity (fraction)
  • Base fluid weight, solids SG: For the solids balance (ppg, dimensionless)
  • System volume, current and dilution fluid weights: For the dilution (bbl, ppg)
  • Pump output, marker strokes, lag strokes: Output per stroke (bbl/stk), the strokes until a washout marker is seen at surface, and the strokes from dropping carbide to the gas peak (stk)

Method: Cuttings volume = Dh² / 1029.4 × (1 − φ) bbl/ft, and their concentration in the returns is the cuttings rate over mud plus cuttings, with no slip. The control-drilling limit is ROP_max = 67 (MW_max − MW_in) Q / Dh². Solids content is the two-component balance 100 (MW − MW_base) / (ρ_solids − MW_base), with ρ_solids = 8.34 × SG. Dilution = V (MW_now − MW_target) / (MW_target − MW_dilution). A washout marker travels down the pipe and back up the annulus. The return volume (strokes × output) is therefore split against pipe capacity plus annular capacity, cased first and then open hole, to give the washout depth. The strokes for the pipe leg alone are then run back through the pipe-only depth formula as a check. A carbide lag volume less the string volume and the cased annulus leaves the open-hole annulus; adding back the pipe in it by OD gives the hole volume, and from that the average diameter. The formulas are the sheet's own _PO.DE.* LAMBDAs, so it calculates with no add-in installed.

Example: Drilling 8½" hole at 90 ft/hr with 500 gpm of 11.2 ppg mud makes 0.056 bbl of cuttings per foot, 0.70% by volume in the returns. A 0.3 ppg annulus limit allows up to 139 ft/hr. With drilled solids at SG 2.6, the mud holds 21.4% solids, and 112 bbl of water brings an 800 bbl system back from 11.6 to 11.2 ppg. A marker back at surface after 4,000 strokes puts the washout at about 6,120 ft. A carbide gas peak at 8,300 strokes shows an open hole averaging 9.17", 27% over gauge.
